Buchu Tea
R 150.00 / 100g
Origin: Skimmelberg, South Africa
Buchu is a fragrant fynbos shrub commonly found in the Cape Floral Kingdom of the Western Cape. It has been used for centuries by the Khoisan for its medicinal value.
Traditionally, buchu has been used to treat all kinds of ailments including colds and flu symptoms, inflammation, as a diuretic (to treat kidney and urinary tract infections) but also as a stomach tonic.
The genus name Agathosma means "good fragnance" in Greek and refers to the aromatic leaves of these plants. When picked or crushed, the tiny leaves with oil glands on the undersides, exude a smell reminiscent of black currant and rosemary.
Flavour: Spicy, resembling black currant, but also reminiscent of a mixture between rosemary and peppermint.
Health benefits: Buchu is 100% organic and caffeine-free. It is considered South Africa’s “miracle herb” with potent natural anti-inflammatory properties. Buchu also has anti-infective, antifungal and antibacterial properties, enabling it to act as a natural antibiotic with no side effects. It is still most commonly used as a herbal diuretic for urinary tract ailments.
How to brew me: 1 tsp (5ml) leaves per cup, steep 5-10 minutes.
